The Brief

Kinross Wolaroi School required a complete dehumidification and ventilation upgrade for the indoor pool at its Orange campus. The 25 m × 10 m pool hall had been enclosed for more than 25 years, and its original air-handling system had reached the end of its serviceable life, no longer able to reliably maintain humidity, temperature and ventilation conditions.

The project scope required Pine Group to remove the existing air-handling unit and internal ductwork entirely and design a new purpose-built pool environmental control system — delivered around the constraints of an operating school calendar, with all major works confined to the Easter and June holiday periods.

The Challenge

Indoor pool halls present a uniquely demanding air-handling environment. Warm, moist, chemically-treated air interacts continuously with cold external surfaces, glazing and structural steel, and the system had to manage several risks at once:

  • Preventing condensation on windows, walls and glazing as pool hall air (typically 28°C / 60% RH) meets colder surfaces below the ~19.5°C dew point.
  • Protecting the building envelope and structure from long-term moisture damage.
  • Distributing air evenly across the hall without blowing directly over swimmers or the water surface, which increases evaporation and discomfort.
  • Replacing corroded, obsolete equipment with a system built to withstand a corrosive pool atmosphere (C4 corrosion classification).

 

Our Approach & Solution

Pine Group removed the existing air-handling unit and ductwork and installed a Dantherm DanX XWPS 12/24 dehumidification air-handling unit — a system purpose-built for swimming pool environments, with C4-rated corrosion protection, an epoxy-coated crossflow heat exchanger, protected coils and corrosion-resistant fasteners throughout.

The unit combines outside-air ventilation, recirculation, heat recovery and refrigeration-based dehumidification in one package. Its crossflow heat exchanger delivers greater than 75% heat-recovery efficiency, with a built-in heat pump providing a second stage of heat recovery, dehumidification and supply-air heating. An integrated mixing section varies outside air from 0–100%, introducing only what’s needed to hold pool hall conditions and minimise unnecessary heating.

New insulated galvanised-steel ductwork was run through the plant room, transitioning to stainless steel where it entered the pool hall itself. The supply duct splits into two spigots feeding Aerotextile fabric ducting, engineered to wash warm, dry air continuously along the external walls and glazing — protecting the coldest surfaces first — while distributing air evenly across the hall without disturbing swimmers or accelerating evaporation.

The completed system gives Kinross Wolaroi School a modern, energy-efficient pool environmental control solution that:

The Brief

Pine Group was engaged by a regional NSW council to install a reliable Air Handling Unit (AHU) for the spa room within a council-operated aquatic centre. To meet the specific environmental requirements of the space, the Dantherm DanX 1HP system was selected and installed.

The Brief

Pine Group was engaged to install a dehumidification system in a newly built residential home in Robertson, NSW, featuring an indoor pool. While the property was modern and beautifully finished, it presented one key challenge — there had been no allowance for concealed ductwork or mechanical ventilation in the original design.

With moisture control critical in any indoor pool setting, the homeowners needed a reliable solution that could manage humidity, prevent condensation, and protect the building’s integrity — delivered through a clean, precise installation within the constraints of the existing structure.

With limited space to work with, the team installed exposed steel ductwork mounted directly to the ceiling — a practical choice that also delivered a modern, industrial look in keeping with the home’s architectural style. Eyeball-style vents were positioned along the ductwork, directing targeted airflow specifically toward windows and glazed doors to control condensation exactly where it was most likely to occur.

Every aspect of the installation required careful planning — from the alignment of duct sections to the placement of vents and the securing of support brackets — all while respecting the design of the finished space.

The Brief

Pine Group was engaged to install a DANTHERM XKS 12/24 Indoor Climate Control System for an indoor swimming pool in Penrith. Given the region’s extreme summer temperatures and cooler winters, the goal was to ensure consistent humidity and temperature regulation for year-round comfort.

A heat pump chiller providing both heating and cooling was implemented so the system could adapt to seasonal variations, maintaining a stable, comfortable indoor environment while optimising energy use and preserving indoor air quality.

The installation centred on the DANTHERM XKS 12/24 — a highly efficient outdoor air dehumidification system with integrated climate control, paired with a heat pump chiller providing both hot and cold water depending on seasonal demand.

Air distribution used a custom ducting design: galvanised steel ductwork externally for durability, and fabric duct internally to promote even airflow across the pool area. Electrical supply and control wiring enabled precise automation, while hydraulic connections — including solenoid valves and actuators — linked the chiller to the air coils for enhanced efficiency.

The DanX XKS system’s advanced crossflow heat exchanger captures and recycles energy, its integrated outdoor air mixing function supplies only the fresh air required, and a free-cooling bypass introduces 100% outdoor air in summer. An additional cooling coil further enhances dehumidification and cooling during hot periods.
