Heat Recovery Ventilation

Penrith, NSW · 2025

Heat Recovery Ventilation

The Brief

Pine Group was engaged to install a DANTHERM XKS 12/24 Indoor Climate Control System for an indoor swimming pool in Penrith. Given the region’s extreme summer temperatures and cooler winters, the goal was to ensure consistent humidity and temperature regulation for year-round comfort.

A heat pump chiller providing both heating and cooling was implemented so the system could adapt to seasonal variations, maintaining a stable, comfortable indoor environment while optimising energy use and preserving indoor air quality.

The Challenge

Penrith’s climate swings between intense summer heat and cool winters, placing conflicting demands on a single system. Every project of this kind also has to balance fresh air supply against energy efficiency without compromising comfort.

  • Maintaining stable temperature and humidity across extreme seasonal variation.
  • Preventing condensation-driven structural damage and preserving indoor air quality.
  • Distributing air evenly using a combination of external and internal ducting types.
  • Integrating hydraulic and electrical control systems for fully automated operation.

  • Up to 80% Energy savings from the crossflow heat exchanger
  • 100% Outdoor air free-cooling available via integrated bypass
  • Year-round Consistent temperature & humidity control

Our Approach & Solution

The installation centred on the DANTHERM XKS 12/24 — a highly efficient outdoor air dehumidification system with integrated climate control, paired with a heat pump chiller providing both hot and cold water depending on seasonal demand.

Air distribution used a custom ducting design: galvanised steel ductwork externally for durability, and fabric duct internally to promote even airflow across the pool area. Electrical supply and control wiring enabled precise automation, while hydraulic connections — including solenoid valves and actuators — linked the chiller to the air coils for enhanced efficiency.

The DanX XKS system’s advanced crossflow heat exchanger captures and recycles energy, its integrated outdoor air mixing function supplies only the fresh air required, and a free-cooling bypass introduces 100% outdoor air in summer. An additional cooling coil further enhances dehumidification and cooling during hot periods.

Outcomes

The result is a highly efficient, reliable and energy-conscious indoor climate control system that ensures optimal conditions for the swimming pool area all year round. The client now benefits from:

  • Consistent temperature & humidity control.
  • Significant energy savings.
  • A healthier, more comfortable environment.
  • Lower operational costs through optimised air handling.
  • 38% Reduction in HVAC energy consumption

Passive House Ventilation for a Balmain Heritage Home Renovation

Balmain NSW · 2025

Passive House Ventilation for a Balmain Heritage Home Renovation

The Brief

An early-1900s Balmain heritage home was undergoing a full renovation and extension to Passive House standard, requiring a ventilation system that could deliver fresh, filtered air, humidity control and year-round climate control — without compromising the building’s airtightness or heritage character.

The client wanted a single, integrated system rather than separate heating, cooling, ventilation and dehumidification units: one solution capable of managing heat recovery, moisture control, and comfortable temperatures throughout the year.

The Challenge

Retrofitting a modern high-performance ventilation system into a heritage structure — while meeting Passive House airtightness requirements — created several constraints that had to be resolved simultaneously:

  • Fitting ductwork and system components within an existing heritage structure with limited cavity and roof space.
  • Meeting Passive House airtightness standards, requiring close coordination with the building team to minimise air leakage.
  • Selecting equipment efficient enough to handle heating, cooling and air exchange without excessive energy draw.

Our Approach & Solution

The team installed a HIDEW RER 100I, an all-in-one air treatment system that integrates ventilation, heating, cooling and dehumidification in a single unit — designed for Passive House-standard homes.

The installation included a custom-designed ducting system engineered for balanced airflow throughout the home, a water chiller for efficient temperature control, hydraulic fittings and pipework, and a buffer tank and expansion tank to support stable, efficient system operation.

Outcomes

The completed system delivers a Passive House-aligned indoor environment that provides:

  • Consistently fresh, filtered air
  • Reduced humidity and improved indoor air quality
  • Energy-efficient heating and cooling

Kinross Wolaroi School Indoor Pool

Orange, NSW · June 2026

Kinross Wolaroi School Indoor Pool

The Brief

Kinross Wolaroi School required a complete dehumidification and ventilation upgrade for the indoor pool at its Orange campus. The 25 m × 10 m pool hall had been enclosed for more than 25 years, and its original air-handling system had reached the end of its serviceable life, no longer able to reliably maintain humidity, temperature and ventilation conditions.

The project scope required Pine Group to remove the existing air-handling unit and internal ductwork entirely and design a new purpose-built pool environmental control system — delivered around the constraints of an operating school calendar, with all major works confined to the Easter and June holiday periods.

The Challenge

Indoor pool halls present a uniquely demanding air-handling environment. Warm, moist, chemically-treated air interacts continuously with cold external surfaces, glazing and structural steel, and the system had to manage several risks at once:

  • Preventing condensation on windows, walls and glazing as pool hall air (typically 28°C / 60% RH) meets colder surfaces below the ~19.5°C dew point.
  • Protecting the building envelope and structure from long-term moisture damage.
  • Distributing air evenly across the hall without blowing directly over swimmers or the water surface, which increases evaporation and discomfort.
  • Replacing corroded, obsolete equipment with a system built to withstand a corrosive pool atmosphere (C4 corrosion classification).

Our Approach & Solution

Pine Group removed the existing air-handling unit and ductwork and installed a Dantherm DanX XWPS 12/24 dehumidification air-handling unit — a system purpose-built for swimming pool environments, with C4-rated corrosion protection, an epoxy-coated crossflow heat exchanger, protected coils and corrosion-resistant fasteners throughout.

The unit combines outside-air ventilation, recirculation, heat recovery and refrigeration-based dehumidification in one package. Its crossflow heat exchanger delivers greater than 75% heat-recovery efficiency, with a built-in heat pump providing a second stage of heat recovery, dehumidification and supply-air heating. An integrated mixing section varies outside air from 0–100%, introducing only what’s needed to hold pool hall conditions and minimise unnecessary heating.

New insulated galvanised-steel ductwork was run through the plant room, transitioning to stainless steel where it entered the pool hall itself. The supply duct splits into two spigots feeding Aerotextile fabric ducting, engineered to wash warm, dry air continuously along the external walls and glazing — protecting the coldest surfaces first — while distributing air evenly across the hall without disturbing swimmers or accelerating evaporation.

Outcomes

The completed system gives Kinross Wolaroi School a modern, energy-efficient pool environmental control solution that:

— Maintains controlled pool hall humidity and temperature
— Delivers balanced outside-air ventilation and exhaust
— Recovers heat from warm extract air via a 75%+ efficient heat exchanger
— Reduces condensation risk on glazing and external walls
— Improves comfort for students, staff and pool users
— Protects the building structure and internal finishes long-term

  • ~21,500 m³/h Nominal airflow
  • 26,000 m³/h Maximum airflow
  • Up to 139 kg/h Dehumidification capacity (VDI 2089 conditions)
  • >75% Heat-recovery efficiency

Overcoming No Provision for Concealed Ductwork: Indoor Pool Dehumidification

Robertson, NSW · 2025

Overcoming No Provision for Concealed Ductwork: Indoor Pool Dehumidification

The Brief

Pine Group was engaged to install a dehumidification system in a newly built residential home in Robertson, NSW, featuring an indoor pool. While the property was modern and beautifully finished, it presented one key challenge — there had been no allowance for concealed ductwork or mechanical ventilation in the original design.

With moisture control critical in any indoor pool setting, the homeowners needed a reliable solution that could manage humidity, prevent condensation, and protect the building’s integrity — delivered through a clean, precise installation within the constraints of the existing structure.

The Challenge

Because the home had not been designed with integrated ventilation in mind, traditional concealed ductwork wasn’t an option. Ceiling voids were unavailable and there was no space to run ducts through internal walls — yet introducing warm, dry air and removing humid air from the pool room remained non-negotiable.

  • No ceiling voids or wall cavities available for traditional concealed ductwork.
  • Preventing fogged glass, mould and long-term damage to internal finishes.
  • Delivering a solution that respected the architectural intent of a newly finished home.
  • Targeting airflow precisely to the areas most prone to condensation — windows and glazed doors.

  • 100% Heat recovery from the double crossflow heat exchanger
  • Minimal Outdoor air intake — just enough to maintain air quality
  • Exposed Steel ductwork solution suited to the home's architecture

Our Approach & Solution

Pine Group installed a Dantherm DanX2HP Indoor Pool Climate Control System — a highly efficient unit combining a double crossflow heat exchanger with an integrated heat pump, delivering heat recovery of over 100% while keeping outdoor air intake to the minimum needed to maintain air quality.

With limited space to work with, the team installed exposed steel ductwork mounted directly to the ceiling — a practical choice that also delivered a modern, industrial look in keeping with the home’s architectural style. Eyeball-style vents were positioned along the ductwork, directing targeted airflow specifically toward windows and glazed doors to control condensation exactly where it was most likely to occur.

Every aspect of the installation required careful planning — from the alignment of duct sections to the placement of vents and the securing of support brackets — all while respecting the design of the finished space.

Outcomes

Once installed, the system performed as expected. The air in the pool room became noticeably more stable and pleasant, with consistent temperature and humidity levels. The client now benefits from:

  • No more fogged windows or glazed doors.
  • Significantly reduced risk of corrosion and dampness to the property.
  • Protection of building materials, paint finishes and furnishings from moisture damage.
  • A discreet, high-standard installation that preserved the home’s architectural intent.
  • 38% Reduction in HVAC energy consumption
  • 54% Average RH maintained at deck level
  • <0.2 ppm Chloramine — below AIRAH threshold
  • 100% Pool hall access maintained during installation
